Choosing between round tables and long tables is a decision many couples struggle with during the wedding planning process. So when it comes to planning a sit-down wedding reception, which table layout works best?

Well – in our experience, there’s really no “one size fits all” approach! Truthfully, the perfect table layout for your own big day will actually depend on a number of different factors such as your guest list, venue capacity and wedding styling vision.

Whether you’re planning a marquee wedding reception or an al-fresco garden setting under the stars, it’s important to weigh up the benefits of both options before making a final decision.

If you’re currently trying to determine whether round or long tables are going to be the best fit for your wedding day celebrations, keep reading for our top tips to keep in mind along with some visual inspiration from real Coolibah Downs weddings!

Consider your desired ambience

One of the first things you’ll want to think about when deciding on your wedding table layout is the ambience you have in mind for your day – how do you actually want your wedding reception to look and feel?

Long tables work well to create a communal, intimate and relaxed atmosphere inside your reception. If you don’t want a “traditional” bridal table, this option will also allow you to sit amongst your family and friends in a more casual manner.

On the other hand, round tables are the perfect option if you want to create a classic, elegant and timeless setting. Guests can converse easily across the table, as well as being able to mix and mingle around the room. If dancing the night away is a priority for you, a round table layout generally allows you to create a larger dance floor, too.

Consider your guest numbers

Your guest numbers are another important consideration when it comes to your wedding table layouts. Which table style will be the most practical to accommodate your expected guest numbers?

For example, in the Coolibah Downs reception marquee, up to 180 guests can be seated using long tables, while up to 130 guests can be seated using rounds. If you’re planning a larger wedding, long tables would be the most practical option – but for a smaller celebration, round tables may be an ideal fit.

Consider your styling vision

Have you considered the kind of styling elements you want to incorporate into your wedding reception? From florals to tableware and centrepieces, there are different benefits to both long and round tables when it comes to your wedding reception decor.

Round tables allow more room for centrepieces and table styling details like charger plates, vases and candles. If table decor is a big priority for you, round tables might be a better option.

Alternatively, long tables tend to work better underneath hanging installations or statement lighting features. The tables themselves can also be easier to style – with less surface area, they don’t require much additional decor to create a beautiful setting. Long tables also give you the option to get creative with details like table garlands and table runners.
